How to Clean an Oven Properly (and When to Pay Someone Else)
4 min read
Soak the racks, apply a paste or oven cleaner to the cool interior, leave it to work, then wipe out and rinse. It takes a few hours of mostly waiting. If the oven is heavily baked-on or your lease asks for a clean oven, oven cleaning is a $100 add-on to any Perth Cleaning Pros clean.
What you need
- Rubber gloves
- Oven cleaner, or bicarb soda and water paste for light grease
- Non-scratch scourer and cloths
- A bath or large tub for the racks
Steps
- Make sure the oven is off and fully cool. Take out the racks and trays.
- Soak the racks in hot water with dish liquid in the bath or tub.
- Apply oven cleaner, or a bicarb paste, to the interior surfaces, avoiding heating elements. Follow the product label.
- Leave it to work. For a bicarb paste, overnight is common. For an oven cleaner, follow the label.
- Wipe out the loosened grime, then wipe again with a damp cloth until no residue is left.
- Scrub the racks, rinse and dry them, and put them back.
- Clean the door glass last, and ventilate the kitchen well.
Mistakes to avoid
- Don't use abrasive pads on enamel or glass
- Don't spray cleaner on elements or fan vents
- Don't skip ventilation when using commercial oven cleaners
- Don't use oven cleaner on a self-cleaning oven unless the manual allows it
